JOINT ACTION IN FRONT OF BOCHUM TOWN HALL: NO DEPORTATIONS TO AFGHANISTAN!
On Wednesday, February 1st, a proposal to reject deportations to Afghanistan will be on the agenda of the Bochum City Council. With a manifestation in front of the town hall, we urge local leaders to take human rights seriously and prevent people from being deported to the unsafe country of Afghanistan. The manifestation starts at 2 pm on Willy-Brandt-Platz (Rathausvorplatz).
Currently more than 400 people from Afghanistan are looking for protection against war, terror, political persecution and related emergencies in Bochum. Afghanistan is not safe, everybody knows that. 1,600 dead and more than 3,500 injured civilians alone in the first half of 2016 speak for themselves. Despite this, Germany has already carried out the second collective deportation to Kabul last Tuesday, despite all protests by human rights organizations and refugee committees. The federal state of NRW also participates. But we in Bochum are not powerless. De facto, it is in the hands of the cities foreigners office, of Mayor Thomas Eiskirch and the politicians of Bochum, whether people from our city can be sent back to terror and war.
Among others, the Initiativkreis Flüchtlingsarbeit called attention to this local responsibility. More than 40 local organisations, associations and voluntary initiatives are working together in this network. The Initiativkreis wrote in a joint appeal:
„It is the employees of the local immigration authorities, who are initiating the process of deportation. They actually decide which names will be on the deportation lists. Therefore, they can also ensure that no one will be deported to the war zone from our city.“ The appeal also states: „We call on the City Council of Bochum: Speak clearly against deportations from Bochum to Afghanistan in a council decision! Provide strong support and backing to the employees of the immigration office, that do not want to become guilty by being part of the deportation process. Make clear that you, as politicians, are expecting the Bochum administration to comply with principles of human dignity, witch means not participating in deportations to war zones.“
With the manifestation in front of the Town Hall, we support the appeal of the Initiativkreis, and the proposal that the authorities of Bochum should use all available opportunities to protect people from being deported to Afghanistan. And we call for your participation in front of Bochum town hall as well!
